Risks of smoking before and after plastic surgery

Dr. Francisco Amaya, the best plastic surgeon in Mexicali and head of the Plastic Surgery program at Hispano Americano Hospital, shared some valuable information regarding smoking before and after having plastic surgery in Mexicali.

Smoking causes, aside from tobacco related issues, problems for healing after Plastic Surgery in Mexicali. A non-smoker will take about a week or a week and a half to heal after a tummy tuck or any other procedure. A smoker causes healing to take longer and to be weaker that it would in normal patients. Tobacco causes and impairment in the blood vessels to the oxygen to be delivered to the wound, slowing the amount of it thus slowing healing.

That’s why we ask patients to stop smoking at least one month before surgery. If a patients won’t keep smoking we most likely will not perform the operation because we know these problems will arise. You can find a lot of information in the internet, as well as other tobacco related diseases.
